One chapter in the history of famous racehorses has to be about this horse, his strength, and his endurance. Red Rum is the racehorse who has made history with three Grand National titles. Thriving through a debilitating disease when he was young, he was able to win many races and have a legendary career.
Famous Racehorse Red Rum
The three-time winner of the Grand National is a definite staple in the history of horse racing. Red Rum had a great race history and fought until his last race.
The beginning of a legend
Red Rum was foaled in Keels, County Kilkenny, Ireland on May 3, 1963. A bay gelding, he was given the name Rem Rum from the last three letters of his sire and dam, Mared and Quorum. When he was old enough to race, Red Rum was diagnosed with a debilitating bone disease. His trainer, Ginger McCain saw something in Red Rum and continued to train him. They would train in the seawater and sand on Southport, Merseyside, and his foot problem was cured because of it.
Legendary race wins
Ridden by jockey, Brian Fletcher, Red Rum won his first Grand National in 1973. He had a record time of 9 minutes, 1.9 seconds. This finish time would stay a record for 16 years. Red Rum had a jockey change before his historic third win at the Grand National of 1977, with the jockey Tommy Stack. The famous racehorse stirred up speculations before his historic third win because many thought that he may be too old to race. He proved to them that at age 12, a horse can still win.
A good run
In 1978, Red Rum was scheduled to race in that year’s Grand National but was unable to race due to a hairline fracture. After the fracture determination, he was retired from racing but still made public appearance in England in the following years. Red Rum, at the age of 30 and in failing health, was put down in 1995. He was buried at the Aintree track near the winning post and has become a stop for fans of Red Rum at the track.
