A jockey refers to a professional athlete who rides a horse in live horse racing track competitions or other equestrian sports. Competition rules usually require jockey men and women to stay under 130 pounds as not to injure their horse. Although jockeys are typically thought to be short in stature, there is no height limit. The weight restriction typically weeds out jockeys over five feet tall. Female jockeys are less common on the track due to the light weights still needing heavy upper body strength. However, female jockeys started to make some strides for gender equality beginning in the late 60s.
