Beverly Park needed his last race, on June 18, following eight months off and is on a solid pattern to repeat his second dirt start of last year when he won gamely by neck off a similar sixth place effort. The win came at seven furlongs at Keeneland so this one mile trip appears right up his alley and in this otherwise pace-less race he could be the lone frontrunner and very tough to run down if allowed to run free early.
Churn N Burn returns from seven months off for Wilkes, who had a strong result at the just concluded Keeneland meeting. He put in a sharp 59 flat five furlong workout coming into the race and although beaten 13 lengths in his last start of 2019 when third, the winner was subsequent stakes winner Ete Indien so the effort wasn’t too bad. Better still, the horse stalked the pace in third early before winning before that and if he can get a similar trip here and if Beverly Park can’t lead from start to finish, Churn N Burn may be able to get up in time as he did last fall.
Motagally is trained by Chad Brown. Yes, that Chad Brown, one of the top trainers in the country year after year. Brown has NEVER started a horse at Ellis Park (at least in the last five years) so this is intriguing as most of his horses are at Saratoga. The colt won handily by six lengths in career start #4 last February (2019) then took 13 months off. After a fourth place effort he improved to second then tried turf and finished 10th. That’s an irrelevant race as he’s back on dirt and a repeat of that 5/16 effort would have him in the thick of the action here.
