#2 Jeweled Princess – min. win betting odds 5/2
#8 Sweet Carolina – min. win betting odds 3/1
#10 Enjoyitwhilewecan – min. win betting odds 3/1
#11 is Tempers Rising who is stakes placed but with a career record of 1-4-2 in nine races so odds are too low to consider a win bet
Jeweled Princess earned her first win three weeks ago at Keeneland in her eighth career start. She had shown a lot of promise early in her career when third, second and second, then didn’t run so well in her next three races. After a poor turf try in June, McPeek dropped her into a 50K maiden claimer and sent her long on dirt and she won nicely with an 88 Equibase Figure which is very competitive with a number of other horses’ recent races. Hernandez rides back, picking over Singita Dreams, who he also rode last out, and I think now that Jeweled Princesshas figured out what she is supposed to do she can do it again, particularly for a trainer who wins with 20% of his starters back-to-back off a maiden win.
Sweet Carolina has done little wrong in five career starts on dirt, winning two and finishing second in the other three. She tried a route for the first time last out and led from start to finish, gamely holding on by a head on the wire. However, she doesn’t need the lead to win as she’s rallied from off the pace previously to win. Sweet Carolina has the best last race Equibase figure (87) in the field so may be the one to beat on paper and at 12/1 deserves a lot more respect than those odds suggest.
Enjoyitwhilewecan moved back to dirt for her most recent start at the end of June after two races on turf and although second it was a big effort. The figure was 72 and so she can improve off it particularly as the race turned out to be a KEY (Productive) race. The winner, Paris Lights, came back to win the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks and the third horse came back to win as well. Enjoyitwhilewecan was between those two and so figures to improve nicely as well.
